Accessibility and Mobility Concerns

Coronavirus update:

Due to a ban on gatherings in New York State, and the requirement of our state and county departments of health to maintain social distance and reduce population density during the COVID-19 pandemic, we are canceling our planned May 2020 Commencement exercises. We are actively working on plans for alternative commencement and doctoral hooding events and celebrations. We know this is deeply disappointing to our graduates and their families, but Adelphi’s duty to adhere to official guidance and to protect our community and each other is paramount. Be assured that all students who are eligible and have completed their requirements toward graduation will still receive their degrees. We will share new celebration plans, once finalized, on this commencement webpage, our coronavirus information page, and by email to all our students.

Closed Captioning

Captioning of speeches will be displayed on the video screens in the arena. Students who need additional assistance should contact the Student Access Office by May 1

Accessible Parking

Accessible parking is located on both the north and south sides of the Coliseum and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. A state or local handicap parking permit or license plate is required.

ADA Compliant Seating for Guests

Nassau Coliseum has clearly marked sections for wheelchair-accessible seating.  These sections are limited to one companion per wheelchair guest, and Coliseum-issued passes are required.  Passes will be distributed at the Coliseum’s Guest Services window on a first-come, first-served basis, so early arrival is recommended.

Please note that Adelphi University and the Coliseum do not have wheelchairs available for Commencement. Guests interested in renting a wheelchair for the ceremony are encouraged to contact a home healthcare supplier in the area. It is strongly suggested that guests with mobility limitations consider using assistive devices.

ADA Compliant Restrooms

There are restrooms designed to accommodate guests with disabilities conveniently located throughout the Coliseum concourse and in the lower lobby.

Elevator Access

The elevator to access the lower level Coliseum Expo Center for student and faculty robing, lineup and procession are located near the main entrance.

Service Animals

Students with service animals are encouraged to contact the Student Access Office if assistance with seating on the Commencement floor is required.

Please note that emotional support animals (comfort animals) will not be permitted.

Specific Accessibility Needs

Students with specific accessibility needs should contact the Student Access Office to ensure appropriate access on the day of the event.
