Grad Checklist

What you need to do before walking across the stage.

To make sure that the weeks leading up to commencement are as stress-free as possible, you need to make sure to do the following things.

Apply for Your Degree and RSVP to Commencement

You must apply to graduate to receive your diploma and confer your degree—even if you’ve completed all the degree requirements.

Graduation and commencement may sound like they’re one and the same, but these terms refer to two different events.

  • Graduation is the process of being awarded a degree.
  • Commencement is the ceremony—with academic attire and “Pomp and Circumstance”—that celebrates graduates receiving their degrees.

While applying for graduation you will be given the opportunity to RSVP for commencement. Please note that participation in the commencement ceremony does not mean you have met all requirements for graduation and are entitled to be awarded a degree. Certification of completion of requirements must be reviewed before a degree is officially awarded.

August graduates who intend to walk in the May commencement ceremony, can only do so after they have completed Open Planning for the summer. Please contact the Office of the Registrar with any specific questions.

The last day to apply to graduate so that your name appears in the program is March 27, 2019.

Order Your Attire

Participation in graduation requires the appropriate academic attire.

You can purchase your cap, gown and other memorabilia online beginning on or about February 1, 2019. Specifics regarding ordering and delivery will be posted at that time.

Pick Up Your MarchingOrder Card

You will receive a MarchingOrder card that will be used for check-in at graduation. It’s also used to properly pronounce your name as you cross the stage, while simultaneously displaying your name and degree on our video wall.

MarchingOrder cards must be picked up before commencement on our Graduate Check-In Days (location and time still to be determined).

Doctoral Candidates do not need to pick up a MarchingOrder Card.

Starting on or about February 1, 2019, we will begin sending out instructions directing you to the MarchingOrder website, where you will be prompted to record the pronunciation of your name. Instructions will only be sent to those who have already applied to graduate.
